Commercial Locksmith in Toronto

Handing over a business key is a small moment. You show a new supervisor which door it opens, point out the alarm keypad and get back to work. Keeping track of that key over the next few years takes a little more attention.

Zeb Auto Locksmith helps Toronto businesses with lock repairs, rekeying, replacement hardware and lockouts. We work with the people responsible for opening up, managing access and leaving the premises secure. Sometimes that's the owner. Sometimes it's the person who has somehow become responsible for every practical job in the building.

Start With the Keys Already Out There

Before ordering another batch of copies, take a look at who has the current ones. Staff changes, cleaning arrangements and temporary cover can leave you with more keys in circulation than you remember issuing. It's easy for the record to fall behind the business.

A simple key register can be enough for a small workplace. Record who received each key, which doors it operates and when it was returned. Give someone responsibility for updating it. A notebook that gets used is more helpful than an elaborate spreadsheet nobody opens.

If you can't account for the copies, rekeying suitable locks may let you start again. The internal keying changes, so the old key no longer operates the lock. Usable hardware can stay in place. Damaged or unsuitable locks may need replacing instead, which we can discuss after checking what's fitted.

Does getting a key back settle everything?

It settles where that particular key is. It doesn't establish whether copies were made. That isn't a reason to assume the worst about a former employee; it's simply a limit of ordinary keys. A change of tenancy, missing keys or an unclear handover may be a sensible time to review access.

For a business taking over new premises, include the side and rear doors in that review. The keys handed over at the front counter may not tell the whole story.

Commercial Doors Have a Busy Day

A shop entrance might open hundreds of times between the first delivery and closing. An office storeroom may only be used a few times. Those doors don't necessarily need identical hardware, even if matching handles would look tidy.

Commercial lock repair starts with checking whether the existing hardware can still do its job. A replacement should suit the door and how often it's used. The handle, latch and any closing equipment also need to work together. Putting a new lock on a door that doesn't close correctly can leave the original frustration in place.

It helps to separate access by need. For example, a supervisor may need the main entrance and stockroom, while someone collecting cleaning supplies only needs one cupboard. Giving everyone the same key may be easy at first, but it can become awkward as the team grows.

A master key arrangement may suit some premises. Individual keys can be limited to particular locks, while an authorised manager holds a key for several. Whether that can work with your existing hardware needs checking. It also needs a clear plan: a master key is convenient, but losing it can affect more than one door.

What about an automatic door opener?

The opener and the locking hardware need to operate together. Changing one part without considering the other can affect how the entrance works. We can discuss the lock work and whether the person responsible for the opening equipment needs to be involved. Customers should still be able to use the entrance as intended once the job is finished.

Finding Time Between Customers

There may never be a completely quiet hour. There might, however, be a useful gap after the morning deliveries or before the next round of appointments. Planned lock work is easier to arrange when we know which doors must stay available and who will be on site.

Before a visit, it helps to have three things settled:

For a local locksmith visit in York, North York or another part of Toronto, our service areas page can help you check coverage. A shared office entrance may involve building management, while a shop with its own street door may have different arrangements. We can work through the scheduling with the person responsible for the premises.

Zeb Auto Locksmith has been in the locksmith business for over 20 years. We understand that fitting the lock is only one part of a commercial visit. The new keys also need to reach the right people, and someone has to know how the door will be secured that evening.

When Closing Time Has Already Passed

If the door won't lock, staying late may be your only immediate option. Zeb offers emergency locksmith help around the clock. Current availability and an estimated arrival time can be confirmed when you call, along with the work that can be assessed during the visit.

A business lockout has a different immediate goal: getting an authorised person back inside. We'll need to verify the right to enter. If the keys are inside and the lock is usable, opening may be all that's needed. If the hardware has failed, we'll go over the repair options and price before further work proceeds.

After a rekey or lock change, leave the next shift a proper handover. Put their new keys where you've agreed, remove obsolete copies from the working set and explain any change to locking up. Include cleaners or other regular visitors who still need authorised access. Nobody wants to arrive early tomorrow and discover that today's repair has left them outside.
